A lagarta de Cerconota achatina (Zeller) (Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae, Stenomatinae): biologia e ocorrência em plantas hospedeiras do gênero Byrsonima Rich (Malpighiaceae) Zoologia
Andrade,I; Diniz,Ivone R; Morais,H.C.
Caterpillars of Cerconota achatina (Zeller, 1855) feed on lhe leaves of Byrsonima Rich in cerrado (savanna) of Brasília (Distrito Federal). They build shelters by tying leaves together with silk and frass. Within the leaf shelters the caterpillars form a tube of silk in which they feed. develop and pupate. In the laboratory the pupal stage is 14,4 days (sd=8,6: n=46). It was not possible to determine the age or numbers of instars of caterpillars in the wild. Of 93 caterpillars collected. 60% were feeding on B. cocclohifolia (Spr.) Kunth, 25% on B. crassa Nied. and 15% on B. verbascifolia [Rich. ex] Adr. & Juss. These numbers suggest a preference for B. coccolobifolia. Caterpillars of all size were found in every month of the year which suggest...

A new species of the endemic Australian genus Roscidotoga Hoare from rainforests in southern Queensland (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Berg, C. van den; Hoare, R.J.B..
The new species Roscidotoga lamingtonia is described, a leafminer on Sloanea woollsii (Elaeocarpaceae) from the subtropical rainforests of Lamington National Park, southern Queensland, and Border Ranges National Park, New South Wales. R. callicomae Hoare, 2000 is recorded for the first time from Queensland, and from Lamington National Park. These records fall within the genus’ limited range in the rainforests in eastern Australia. R. lamingtonia is the second species of the genus feeding on Elaeocarpaceae. On the basis of a few possible apomorphies we hypothesize one host-shift from Cunoniaceae to Elaeocarpaceae. DNA barcodes for R. lamingtonia and R. callicomae are given.

A note on three species of Taractrocera Butler (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) Naturalis
Jong, R. de.
Three similar looking species of Taractrocera, generally known as ziclea Plötz, archias Felder and alinea Plotz, are re-examined and existing confusion is clarified. As a consequence, the correct name for the first species is shown to be T. luzonensis (Staudinger), and for the last species T. nigrolimbata (Snellen). The name Thymelicus ziclea Plötz turned out to be a junior synonym of Pamphila archias Felder. Diagnostic characters are given to separate the three species, and the geographic variation is surveyed.

A preliminary molecular phylogeny of shield-bearer moths (Lepidoptera: Adeloidea: Heliozelidae) highlights rich undescribed diversity Naturalis
Milla, L.; Nieukerken, E.J. van; Vijverberg, R.; Doorenweerd, C.; Wilcox, S.A.; Halsey, M.; Young, D.A.; Jones, T.M.; Kallies, A.; Hilton, D.J..
Heliozelidae are a widespread, evolutionarily early diverging family of small, day-flying monotrysian moths, for which a comprehensive phylogeny is lacking. We generated the first molecular phylogeny of the family using DNA sequences of two mitochondrial genes (COI and COII) and two nuclear genes (H3 and 28S) from 130 Heliozelidae specimens, including eight of the twelve known genera: Antispila, Antispilina, Coptodisca, Heliozela, Holocacista, Hoplophanes, Pseliastis, and Tyriozela. Our results provide strong support for five major Heliozelidae clades: (i) a large widespread clade containing the leaf-mining genera Antispilina, Coptodisca and Holocacista and some species of Antispila, (ii) a clade containing most of the described Antispila, (iii) a clade...

Alfred Russel Wallace and the Darwinian Species Concept: His Paper on the Swallowtail Butterflies (Papilionidae) of 1865 Gayana
Mallet,James.
Soon after his return from the Malay Archipelago, Alfred Russel Wallace published one of his most signifcant papers. The paper used butterfies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterfies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist defnition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed...
